Market Regimes
Two signs, four markets
Combine the sign of GEX (stability) with the sign of DEX (direction) and you get four fundamentally different market personalities. Knowing which one you're in tells you which playbook applies — and which trades are traps.
| Regime | GEX / DEX | Personality |
|---|---|---|
| GRIND | + / + | Stable uptrend |
| VISE | + / − | Stable downtrend |
| LAUNCHPAD | − / + | Volatile uptrend |
| CASCADE | − / − | Volatile downtrend |
GRIND — the stable uptrend
Dealers dampen volatility while directional flow leans bullish. The market climbs slowly, dips are shallow and get bought mechanically.
- ✅ Buy pullbacks toward support; be patient with targets.
- ❌ Don't chase breakouts — positive gamma sells into them.
- Character: low volatility, steady drift higher, pinning near big strikes.
VISE — the squeeze lower
Stability with bearish pressure. Dips get bought (positive gamma), but every rally gets sold aggressively. Price grinds lower inside a tightening range.
- ✅ Sell rips toward resistance; take profits early.
- ❌ Don't buy breakouts of resistance — they rarely follow through here.
- Character: heavy tape, capped rallies, slow bleed.
LAUNCHPAD — squeeze fuel
Negative gamma with bullish pressure: dealer hedging amplifies upside. Resistance levels stop being barriers and start being fuel — breaking one forces more mechanical buying.
- ✅ Momentum longs; add on strength rather than fading it.
- ❌ Don't short "overbought" — squeezes go further than seems reasonable.
- Character: fast, directional, gap-and-go behavior.
CASCADE — the waterfall
Negative gamma with bearish pressure — the most dangerous regime. Support levels shatter and dealer hedging accelerates every leg down.
- ✅ Momentum shorts; respect the trend completely.
- ❌ Never catch falling knives — "cheap" gets cheaper, vertically.
- Character: vertical moves, failed bounces, panic tape.
Regimes are half the story
A regime describes the board's structure. Live execution still depends on where price sits relative to the flip level and the walls, what the actual flow is doing, and the time of day (see 0DTE Basics for the intraday rhythm). Structure can also disagree with price location in ways that trap traders — a bullish-looking board with price stuck under a gamma ceiling behaves nothing like a true GRIND.
How you'll see it on the platform
The Signal Engine classifies the regime continuously in real time, warns when the structure carries trap conditions, and adapts its trade scenarios to the regime and market phase automatically. The full logic — including conviction scoring and signal gates — is covered in the Signal Engine manual.
