CEX — Charm & Time Decay
What is Charm?
Charm measures how an option's delta changes purely from the passage of time. Aggregated across the board (CEX on the platform), it reveals a flow most traders never consider: dealers re-hedging not because price moved, but because the clock did.
On 0DTE options, where an entire lifetime elapses in hours, charm is enormous.
The mechanics, in plain terms
As expiration approaches, out-of-the-money options lose their delta — their odds of finishing in the money collapse. Dealers who hedged those deltas now hold hedges they no longer need, and must unwind them:
- Positive net CEX — the unwind forces dealers to buy as time passes. The market gains a gentle, persistent updrift.
- Negative net CEX — dealers must sell as time passes. A persistent downdrift weighs on every bounce.
This is not a burst of activity like a gamma squeeze — it is a drift. Slow, steady, and relentless, strengthening hour by hour because time decay accelerates toward the close.
Reading charm like a trader
- Charm sets the "wind direction". Trading against a strong charm drift means every consolidation resolves against you.
- It accelerates after lunch. Early in the day charm is a whisper; from mid-afternoon it becomes one of the loudest flows in the market.
- Drift, not burst. When charm is the dominant force, trade the grind — scalps and patient directional positions — rather than expecting explosive breakouts.
- Watch for alignment. When charm, DEX, and volume flow all point the same way, afternoon trends become remarkably persistent.
The lunchtime trap
The hours around midday combine accelerating time decay with evaporating volume. Premiums bleed even when price goes nowhere, and failed breakouts are the norm. If you hold long options through lunch, charm and theta are both working against your position every minute.
How you'll see it on the platform
Net CEX drives the market-bias readings on the Signal Engine, and per-strike charm profiles show where price is likely to drift as the day ages. The phase indicators tell you when charm has taken over as the dominant force.
